The inspiration behind this eveningwear piece comes from an art installation in Montreal. This art installation was done by Patrick Bernatchez in his series called Chrysalids. The art (seen on the inspiration board) was spools of thread being spun into a giant cocoon while classic music was playing. The image was so surreal, and mimicked the web like cocoons done by spiders; thus, inspiring my design for webbed fabric and a cocoon like silhouette.
The final product was successful in the fit and portraying the original design. Another successful attribute of the garment is its ability to hold the cowls on the side which was due to the heavy weight of the crepe-back satin. New knowledge that came from this work is learning how labour intensive designing and the pressing work for evening wear. One thing I was quite happy about was the fabric and it’s wonderful weight/structure, which made sewing and pressing fairly easy to handle.
